We are all on a journey. It doesn’t matter if you believe that life is a product of chance and circumstance or, like me, you believe that we are each in control of our life experience. No matter your perspective I’m sure you can agree with me that way to have the most enjoyable experience means to do the best that you can in every situation. The desire to do our best stems from the inherent need for each of us to want to progress. We each have a unique set of characteristics and qualities that make up our personalities. Our innermost desire is to develop that personality and ultimately achieve success in our endeavors.
Throughout my personal journey, I have discovered a few things that have been extremely helpful in cultivating my true self and remaining consistent with my personal development. I’d like to share a few of those things with you.
Be Grateful. Gratitude is so very important because it places you in a space where you can be open to receive. Even when things do not appear to be progressing in your life, or at the pace that you desire, realize that you are so blessed to be in the situation you are in right now. The things you take for granted are the things that someone else in the world is praying for. The fact that you are reading this right now means you have breath in your lungs, coherent thoughts in your mind, and the capability to navigate the internet. At this very moment, there are families grieving because someone they love no longer has breath in their body. Always remember, your situation could be worse so give thanks for everything…big and small. I have a challenge for you; everyday upon waking and every night before you go to sleep, name at least 3 things that you are grateful for. Expressing gratitude for the things that you have puts you in the headspace where you are no longer consumed by and worrying about the things that you do not have. Personal development is about abundance and growth, not lack and loss. When you can be grateful for what you have and who you are, you can begin to cultivate the things that you desire.
Create a routine/schedule (and stick to it!). Your habits create your results. If you are really serious about improving your life you must have control of it. To gain control means to create a consistent schedule and daily routine for yourself. Control requires commitment. Committing to a schedule/daily routine will help to enforce the new habits that you need to cultivate in order to improve your life and reach your goals.
Read. Reading is fundamental to developing your mind. I don’t want to go off on a tangent but let me just say that the cultivation of your mind is the most important thing you could ever to in the process of developing yourself. Studying and reading about the ways you can improve your life helps you keep those positive thoughts prevalent in your mind, which in turn will motivate you to take the action necessary to actually change.
Find role models/mentors. Being around like-minded individuals who have accomplished what you are desiring to accomplish, or who at least have the mindset and drive to accomplish their goals, is an excellent motivator for you to develop your life. Personal development is not easy, but having a mentor/support system to keep you accountable will help to you to move forward.
Stay consistent. Realize that changing your life does not happen overnight. Yes, making the decision happens in an instant, but the commitment is the part that requires the most work. In my opinion, the best way to stay committed is to identify your “why.” Always keep in mind why you desire to change. You will be more likely to stay committed to accomplishing something when you have a clear understanding of why you want to achieve it.
The beautiful thing about the life is that each of our journeys is unique. We are all at different stages and crossroads. The commonality is that through the development of our own personal desires, each of has the capability to elevate and accomplish our goals. I encourage you to keep pressing forward and create the life that you were meant to live.
Live fully. Love freely. Grow daily.
Love,
Niki Sunshine
